Gay and lesbian relationships - Civil partnership

The Civil Partnership Bill has had a dramatic effect on all areas of domestic life for gay or lesbian couples. It changed the implications of housing, pensions, welfare benefits, income, inheritance, occupation rights in property, responsibility for children and maintenance money for children, and property ownership.

If you are thinking of entering a civil partnership or 'gay marriage' and you want to protect certain assets, you should consider a pre-nuptial agreement.  These agreements can provide peace of mind and in the sad event that you separate, will at least mean that you will know in advance how your assets and property will be dealt with.

Particularly if one or both of you owns a property before you decide to marry, you must take advice about this before your marriage.
