Consultant Solicitor and Mediator
Mel qualified as a solicitor in 2003 and works with Clapham & Collinge on a consultancy basis. She specialises in advising parents of children with special educational needs, particularly around Education, Health and Care Plans. Mel is also a qualified civil and commercial mediator and an Associate Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
Having graduated with an Honours Degree in Business from the University of Edinburgh, Mel was sponsored through Nottingham Law School by international law firm Eversheds. Setting off on a round the world trip after qualification she subsequently decided to return to her Norfolk roots to practice law. Mel specialised in Family Law for many years before a change of career, establishing both the Law and Business Studies A level courses at a new Sixth Form College.
Following a career break whilst her children were young, Mel returned to work as an Independent Supporter for Norfolk SEND Partnership (Norfolk County Council's impartial advice, information and support service for young people and parents/carers of children with Special Educational Needs and/or Disability). This role combined two areas of long standing interest, law and education. Mel was Chair of Governors for a local primary school for a number of years. After a year in post it became clear that families were seeking local specialist legal advice to ensure the best possible educational outcomes for their children with SEND. Mel is passionate about ensuring that children and young people with special educational needs receive the support they require and are entitled to under the law.
Mel is married with two children. She enjoys travelling, theatre, keeping fit and walks with the family's three dogs.
