The Business of Charities 2019: Keeping Ahead of the Curve

The Business of Charities 2019: Keeping Ahead of the Curve

On Tuesday 26th February we delivered our biggest Charities briefing on record, with 108 delegates in attendance, representing the charity sector in Norfolk.

With rising demand and increasingly restricted resources, charities are facing ever-growing pressure to deliver services whilst complying with regulations, changing legislation and meeting the expectations of their trustees and supporters. While charities don't always have the time to focus on the many legal regulations affecting their organisations, they must, nonetheless, comply with all of them in order to survive.

At this free-to-attend legal briefing, members of our charities team addressed many of the important issues faced by the VCSE sector and provided delegates with an essential toolkit to avoid risk and develop a sustainable future.

The briefing included:

  • Legacy giving - Ilott v Mitson
  • Contested probate claims
  • Recruitment and retention of trustees
  • Trustee responsibilities
  • GDPR - 9 months on
  • Charities as employers
  • Employees, self-employed and volunteers
  • Governance

Delegate feedback:

''Great range of issues addressed. Fantastic turnout, lots of people from different organisations.''

''Format was good and thought it came across well – I felt it was pitched at just the right level.''

''Good variety of topics and great opportunity for networking.''

''Interesting, insightful and useful content. Useful to have experts in the room to answer questions. Professional, warm and welcoming.''

Louis Hilldrup-Boorman, Marketing Manager said: ''Each year we've seen a significant increase in attendance and this year's charities briefing was our biggest event to date. Based on positive feedback from delegates and continual increase in attendance, it's evident that charities value this annual event and welcomed guidance from our charity specialists on their legal obligations. We look forward to hosting our first charity conference in the summer.''

During the event, Partner and Head of Charities Department Neale Grearson launched Clapham & Collinge's next charity event; Norfolk's Big Charity Conference 2019. Taking place on Wednesday 12th June at The Space in Norwich, this event has been developed to inspire and offer practical solutions to charities needs from a range of local businesses within the professional services industry. During the conference workshops will be delivered by charity specialists from Clapham & Collinge Solicitors, Alan Boswell Group (Insurance Broker and Independent Financial Planners), Larking Gowen (Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors) and Spalding & Co (Chartered Surveyors).
