Moving House During November Lockdown

Robert Jenrick, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, tweeted this weekend to confirm the status of the housing market ahead of Thursday's measures.

  • Robert confirmed renters and homeowners will be able to move;
  • Removal firms and estate agents can operate;
  • Construction sites can and should continue;
  • Tradespeople will be able to enter homes; and
  • All must follow COVID-19 safety guidance.

Guidance issued on the gov.uk website, which was last updated on 29th August, confirms that one of the simplest steps you can take when moving home is to wash your hands frequently and keep as much distance as possible from other people who are not members of your household. The guidance on maintaining a two metre distance where possible remains in place, as well as taking extra precautions when in close contact with others, such as wearing a face covering.

The government encourages all parties to be as flexible as possible and to be prepared to delay moves in the event that someone in the chain is unwell and having to self-isolate.

If you are in the process of buying and/or selling your property, you should discuss the possible implications of COVID-19 with your legal adviser. Click here for the full government guidance on home moving during the coronavirus outbreak.
