Creating a Dementia Friendly Community in Norfolk

Creating a Dementia Friendly Community in Norfolk

Last year, we held 6 free dementia awareness sessions in conjunction with Dementia Friends – an initiative lead by the Alzheimer's Society to help spread the word about dementia and to help create dementia friendly communities across Norfolk.

Our lawyers are keen to do what they can, having seen first-hand the devastating affect this condition has on the families who care those diagnosed with dementia. These sessions were delivered by Helen Burrows, a 'Dementia Friends Champion' and were incredibly well-received, helping those participants understand the 5 key points about dementia, namely:

  • It's not a normal part of getting old
  • It's caused by diseases of the brain – the most common being Alzheimer's
  • It's not just about losing your memory
  • People can live well with dementia with the right support and understanding
  • There is more to the person than the dementia

Together, Clapham & Collinge and Dementia Friends created over 60 new dementia friends in Norfolk, which is something we are incredibly proud of, but we want to go further. Lin Whitehead, Partner, Head of the Private Client Department and Dementia Friend said:

"The dementia awareness sessions really reminded us that we often look at just the disease, rather than person, and we are keen to run more sessions in the Autumn in both Norwich and Sheringham in order to raise further awareness and create more dementia friends. People with dementia and those caring for them want to carry on going about their daily lives and be included in their local community, but they sometimes need a helping hand to do so."

We are holding our next dementia awareness session on Wednesday 16th September (St Catherine's House, All Saints Green, Norwich NR1 3GA)
