Norfolk's Big Charity Conference

Norfolk's Big Charity Conference

At Norfolk's Big Charity Conference on Wednesday 12th June, Clapham & Collinge are delighted to be joined by other specialists in the charity sector to provide a unique insight into the essential questions that trustees need to deal with. These masterclasses will enable trustees and staff of charities to interact with the speakers and to share experiences with other delegates. The speakers will be:

  • Michael Olmer from Clapham & Collinge Solicitors – Michael will be leading his group in discussions on the structure of charitable organisations and looking at conversion from one form to another. His brief will be to talk about the involvement of the Charity Commission in this and look at the issues that need to be considered on setting up any charity as well as running that charity.
  • Nigel Morgan from Spalding & Co will centre on property aspects. From the basics of why a charity would wish to buy freehold property rather than leasehold property and the differences between them to areas such as dilapidations under leases. The importance of getting it right when a charity buys or leases a property is often misunderstood especially in a haste to secure premises so that the charities objectives can be carried forward.
  • Giles Kerkham from MHA Larking Gowen will open his group to a wide range discussion of accountancy issues and deal with the questions delegates pose in an "open house". Giles will cover areas such as reserve policies, taxation and trading - All crucial areas for the "business of charities".
  • Ben Hewitt from Alan Boswell Group will be dealing with the responsibility of trustees in financial investment as well as such things as trustee indemnity insurance. Ben will highlight when to take advice from a financial adviser and when trustees could be in breach of their duties by not taking advice or investing charity money appropriately.

The four speakers will dovetail their groups into an overall holistic training session for trustees and all those involved in charities. The opportunity to "compare notes" with others in similar charities will also be invaluable so that this "toolkit" will give the perfect manual on key areas of all charities whether delegates are new to being involved with charities or have been involved for some time.
